It’s old news that our world is broken, fallen, dysfunctional, evil — isn’t it? But somehow we’re always surprised by the depth and the subtleties of the wickedness we see. It’s only God’s grace that restrains evil and keeps us from seeing greater brokenness than we already do.
One story from the hospital this week illustrates this brokenness. A homeless, schizophrenic mom sought no prenatal care during her pregnancy. She felt “pain” the day before her delivery, and so she took meth. The baby, of course, tested positive for drugs. The mom reported to the nurse that her baby “walking around the room and talking to me.” Afraid for the baby’s safety, the nurse transferred the baby to the nursery for RN supervision. However, as events developed, it became apparent that the dad (who was just released from prison) was at high risk for trying to kidnap the baby. So the baby was on “lock-down” in the nursery for security purposes. Soon, the grandmother showed up, insisting that she was going to take the baby home with her and trying to force her way into the nursery. All the while, all of us nurses felt so sad that this baby will bear the consequences of the poor decisions of her parents.
It is such a broken situation. Not surprising, considering there is nothing new under the sun. But terribly heart-breaking.
